A veterinary hospital is defined by its service. We feel our service to our clients and our patients is exceptional. We always strive to do more.
Wellness pet examinations usually include a physical exam once or twice yearly. Pets age much more rapidly than their owners, so more frequent wellness exams can identify diseases promptly, helping to treat your pet earlier.
When your pet reaches a senior age, usually around eight years, bloodwork should be done to monitor the organs. Vaccines are also administered at this time.
At Richmond, our goal is to minimize vaccines, so canine rabies and distemper vaccines are given every three years after the initial puppy series. We use only PUREVAX by Merial vaccines in cats, following the American Association of Feline Practicioner's guidelines for vaccination regimens.

We offer state-of-the-art anesthesia and monitoring technology to help ensure your pet's safety. All pets are required to have a thorough exam by our vets, followed by pre-anesthetic blood tests, and an ECG, if the patient is over eight years old. any pets that appear healthy on the outside may have an underlying condition or disease which could compromise safety under anesthesia. These tests help us find them.
Patients receive an IV catheter and fluids for the duration of their surgery, which keeps them well-hydrated, and promotes faster recovery. The fluid pump monitors and regulates the correct amount needed. They also receive post-operative pain medication for their comfort.
Your pet is monitored closely in our treatment area, until fully recovered. Some may go home that day, some may be required to stay overnight. In those cases, an examination is performed in the morning to make sure there are no complications, and the patient is on the way home.

Remember - your pets need dental care too! If you don't brush your pet's teeth weekly, then by approximately age five a deep dental cleaning will be needed. Studies have shown that no other procedure for small animals does more to help them than periodic teeth cleaning and after-care. We recently started using Sanos, a new product which is a six-month sealer. It can be used after a dental, or as a preventative. Please call to schedule an appointment to have Sanos placed on your pet's teeth.
It is much easier to prevent fleas than to resolve a flea infestation. As soon as the weather warms, fleas start to hatch. Fleas can make life miserable for pets and their owners with a vicious cycle of biting and scratching.
Problems with fleas are common seasonal issues in spring and summer. Treatment and prevention of fleas and ticks is critical to a happy, healthy summer for you and your pet. Ask about the Frontline Plus Satisfaction Guarantee-

If your pet has a microchip, the chances of it being reunited with you are greatly increased. Datamars (http://www.datamars.com/), is the leader in RFID-based microchips and features a microchip the size of a grain of rice that is implanted under the skin of a pet using a single-use syringe.
It contains a unique serial number that can be read using a radio frequency, hand-held scanner. The number can be identified through a website called PetLink (http://www.petlink.net/), so the pet can be traced to its owner and reunited.
